Hi everyone,
I have been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis 3-4 years ago and have been going well. I had bloody stools as a "flare up" last year and it was treated with prednisone 50mg and then tapered off.
the specialist has told me that I need Imuran now to treat the condition due to another flare up this year but i'm not convinced...
has anyone taken imuran and can you give me an idea if its worth taking or not?
is there another treatment i can try before trying imuran?
Is it normal to get bloody stools in "flare ups"? If so, how have you managed it?
i would appreciate hearing your experiences

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic disease in which the colon and rectum become inflamed, leading to do my assignment abdominal pain, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), and frequent bowel movements. It is caused by an abnormal immune response in people who are genetically susceptible.

I have been taking Imuran since I was diagnosed almost 3 years ago and have not had any issues while taking it. Taking Imuran and along with a biological drug seems to work for me.

I hope you find relief soon.
My experience with UC: my first flare lasted 4 years. During that time, I had bloody mucous and various stages of stool. The cramping, disrupted sleep, malnutrition was awful.
Imuran: it made me nauseous even with Zofran. I took it for 4 months and had to stop due to increased liver elevations the GI deemed dangerous.
I was in remission for 4 months through diet, exercise, supplements and sleep.
In the midst of a pandemic, loss of income, I sold my home and relocated, (I was in remission).
For the past 3 months, I'm back to a flare..worse than I've experienced.
Imuran works well for some. It has risks and your gi will order monthly labs. Ask for Zofran or something to offset the nausea.
