Abscess/Fistula

Thu, August 12, 2021 1:39 AM

Hello everyone, I was wondering if anyone else here has/had a fistula or abscess related to Crohn's or UC. I was actually diagnosed with Crohn's as a teenager due to a perianal abscess that was caused by a fistula. It's almost 10 years later and for the past year or so (following an unrelated surgery) the same area has been causing me a lot of pain. I've noticed drainage some days and I have to take OTC pain meds almost daily just to get through my day. Another odd symptom is that behind my knee/upper calf area I've developed a bruise that becomes very painful when the fistula area is hurting. I am currently taking azathioprene and Entyvio. I've tried almost every other medication for Crohn's, and was in remission for years prior to this recent past year or so where the fistula area started causing problems again. What's even more frustrating and confusing is that there isn't an active fistula or new abscess.. It's just the same area in pain and draining.

I was also experiencing joint pain in my hands, wrists, and feet. The Pentasa I'm taking has taken care of the joint issues (as well as the CD), and the surgery has taken care of the bloating and indigestion. I would consult with your doctor to see if the bruise is related. Also, you should not be in pain, so see your doctor right away. drift boss

I just had surgery for 4 (potentially more) fistulas in my terminal ileum. I was symptom free for almost 3 decades. Due to the location, my symptoms were severe bloating and indigestion. I had trouble catching my breathe because I couldn't get in a lungful of air. I also had joint pain in my hands, wrists and feet. The Pentasa I am on has eliminated the joint issues (and is managing the CD), and the surgery eliminated the bloating and indigestion. I would suggest asking your doctor if the bruise is linked. Also, you should not be having the pain, so definitely consult your doctor.
