Crohn's diet

Sat, November 09, 2019 10:01 PM

Hi everyone! I was just diagnosed with Crohn's disease last month. I am on Pentasa for a month and I still have pain daily. What type of diet should I follow? High fiber, lots of raw fruits/vegetables or low residue: no fresh fruit/vegetables, all easily digestible food? I don't know If this daily pain are flare ups or not so I'm not sure how to act accordingly regarding my diet. Can anyone help?? Thank you!!

DUDE!
SCD DIET!!!!!  It put me into remission for the entire time I was on it! It saved my babies life!
I was 95 pounds, pooping just blood and liquid 20ish times a day, Pentassa did nothing, I was exsdausted and dying.  After strict SCD, I gained 80 lbs, had a healthy baby, went into remission for years and years, until I went back to normal eating for an extended period of time.  I cannot reccomend it enough. its hard for a few weeks but it sure beats being sick!

Thank you thank you for answering! You've been very helpful! Pentasa has only started working after I changed my diet. They were thinking of starting me on prednisone as well but I'm hoping I don't have to. I was on prednisone for a year and it was horrible. The diet has been a big adjustment for me... trying to stay healthy without all the fresh food. Thank you again!

I would be interested to hear if Pentasa ends up working for you. I also have Chron's since April this year. They put me on Remicade and at first worked, but was not enough. They then doubled my dose and it started to work again, but now it's proving ineffective for me as my symptoms keeps coming back. As for diet, I was told by my nutritionist to eat a low fiber diet, because the insoluable fiber like apple peels, grape peels, some leafy veggies, chia seeds does not get absorbed by the gut. In fact, it acts like a coating of the inner gut which for normal people is good, but for us is bad because the inflammation of our intestines causes the internal pathway to become small. So adding fiber coating makes the pathway even smaller and can cause a flare up and other issues. If you like those fruits, peel the skin off before eating them. I also stay away from grainy products like seeded breads. I sometimes use a slow juicer to masticate whole veggies like carrots and celery and turn them into juices which I drink. Sometimes I'll juice up some pineapple, apple, and carrots to make a good tasting juice. For protein, I started off drinking protein shakes from weight lifting powder from GNC. But as I later came to realize, dairy products triggers my Chron's symptoms as I have trouble digesting all of the dairy. So the dairy produces gas which for me brings pain in my gut. So now I drink a pea-based, dairy free protein powder shake. At one point, I was able to eat regular rotisserie chicken from the store. Though now my symptoms are becoming worse again and I have to limit myself from whole meats. Fish is always good for me. I tolerated Salomon quite well if pan seared with veggie oil, or dairy free butter, or just boil the fish. Sometimes I grill fish like bass, tilapia. I also tolerated fish sticks like Gordon Ramsey. I do not drink soda. I drink water, caffeine-free tea, almond milk, coconut milk. Sometimes I can tolerate apple juice, mixed orange tropical juices, but again the high sugar can sometimes trigger me. Sugar free Gatorade is ok also. I can tolerate eating white rice. One type of rice I recently fell in love with is Indian basmati rice. When you cook it properly, it is fluffy and tastes amazing! White bread is ok for me. I got away with smooth creamy peanut butter on bread, but lately it seems to be heavy for me and can cause me to feel it in the gut so I've limit myself on that too. Ramen noodles are ok for me as well. Indian mint chutneys and tamarind chutneys are a great alternative to sugar infested jams to put on bread. Just YouTube everything you can see how to make them.
