Elder with indeterminate colitis

Mon, June 16, 2008 7:16 PM

Im writing on behalf of my 81 year old father who has been suffering with indeterminate colitis for over 3 years.  (He also has been diagnosed, hospitalized and treated for c. difficile, which according to a test last week was not present, thankfully.) He recently had unrelated surgery for his back and while in the hospital and after he came home has had a terrible time with the colitis/crohns.  Im writing as a newbie to this, trying to understand the vast array of medications that hes been prescribed, and realizing based on my first search of this site and the web that there are very few entries by seniors.  Im curious whether there is anyone out there dealing with this as a senior or as a caregiver to a senior because Im really worried that the latest medications/treatments (like remicade and immunosuppressants) could be dangerous for a rather weak (at this point) elderly man.

Hes currently on 40 mg prednisone, 6 MP/Mercaptopurine and lomotil (1 every 6 hours), plus other meds for other issues (vancosin antibiotic to prevent recurrence of the c. difficile; toprol for heart/PVCs; tylenol PM to sleep; and was taking elmiron to control bladder inflammation).

Any thoughts or resources to recommend specifically for elderly patients?

with thanks,

Liz
