Humira and pregnancy

Fri, August 29, 2008 1:02 PM

Has anyone here gotten pregnant while taking Humira? Have you stayed on it while being pregnant?

I was on Remicade for 5 years even while I was pregnany with my first, but at my last infusion I had a severe reaction and now have to switch to Humira. We want to go for baby #2 and I wanted to hear from others out there who are taking the drug.

Any information would really help me.

Thanks

I have been on Humira for three years and took it all throughout my first pregnancy. My son is now two and we had no problems whatsoever! I am currently five months pregnant (with a daughter!) and have stayed on the Humira again. The doctors all say that Humira is safe for pregnancy, as it does not cross the placenta. However, it is secreted in breast milk, so they don't recommend you do that.

Anyway, you should definitely not be afraid to talk this over with your doctor. And remember that overall, if you're not healthy, your baby is less likely to be healthy... so even though medications can be a little scary, you have to be at the best you can in order for that baby to thrive!

Best of luck!

I too am trying to get pregnant.  I have been on Humira since January 2008.  It is a similar drug to Remicade.  I know that there is a pregnancy registry for Humira patients.  They ask that anyone taking Humira and pregnant or trying to conceive register.  The 800 number is on the Humira web site.  I brough this same concern to my doctor as well and he said that there should not be any problems.

My daughter wants to get pregnant and wants to go off her medication but her doctor feels her medication is the only thing keeping her well.  How have people dealt with this problem?
