So far on all of my research, alcohol seems to be the one touchy subject I can't find a ton of information on! I just want to know what people have done because currently I am still a college student and well, college kids are still drinking haha. Is this something that I should totally quit? or is it possible to still drink occasionally? or is it nothing to be worried about at all?

I think you're going to have to find out what works best for you. For me.. Beer is a no go! White wine is better than red. Clear liquors are better than dark Tequila seems to be the most tolerated, has to be 100% agave, don't do the mixed-like Cuervo-has added sugar. As for mixers, I stay away from anything with added sugars-cola, juices, etc & go for tonic or fresca. As for anything, moderation is key! Good luck!

I never stopped drinking after my diagnosis with UC. After I got this under control that is. I've always been just a social drinker, but I drink what I want , when I want.
Like every one says, we all react differently. I suggest starting slow. Try a beer with dinner. Another time try wine. Then maybe light cocktails. Don't mix it up, that way you know what you can and can not have.
Good luck my friend.

PS - aslso it contains a lot of calories - but not nutritional benefits. Lots of sugars that can cause stomach upsets (even worse with UC or CD)

Ask yourself what do you gain by drinking? How do you feel during & after? Is it really worth it? Socially if your feeling out of the norm try asking the bartender for Ice water or soda - they dont need to know there isnt any alcohol in it! Beer, try na in a glass or say it makes you too sick and you need to stick to the mixed ones (ie plain soda & Ice), if its really a social stigma (bring your own in a flask --- juice). I always found it more fun being the sober one & watching the others... you can let loose w/o it & they never know!
Or even better be original! Stick to just the red bull drink - say it is a health kik... you might find your REAL friends will not care wether it is alcohol or NOT.

I am also on remicade and find that drinking makes me extremely tired to the point that I CANNOT stay awake. I was curious if this was due to the remicade or worse, AGE?!

I feel your pain. I'm in a sorority in college so basically I'm constantly presented with opportunities to drink and go out. It all depends on the night for me. I always try to go out even if I'm not feeling well because, for me personally, I often feel better if I go out and get my mind off of it. If I don't feel well., I won't drink anything and I'll just go to socialize and dance, etc. If I'm feeling alright, I'll have a few but never more than that because even if I'm feeling amazing that day, I won't after I drink a lot. I think like anything else for us, moderation is key.

I would drink on occasion but since being diagnosed my fiance who didnt approve of drinking to begin with has forbidden me to even attempt it. Ive had a lot trouble as of late but when i do get better and have it under control ill try it.

Just be carefull about getting dehydrated. It's really easy to do if you drink a lot, even easier if you drink enough to get sick.

It depends on what meds you're on - no alcohol with methotrexate, for example. It's safe to say that I will poop like a goose when I drink, but still do it here and there. Gotta live your life. Just be ready for the consequences!

hi there-
i have UC and coping with it for 4 years....i am taking Remicade and its kinda working. I had asked my dr..he said that i could drink alcohol but not insanely amount either.
i would make a list of what you like to drink and then test what fits best to your body. as for me..i have done my days of drinking and learned 1. don't drink mixed drinks with soda bc it gives a hangover. sugar/carbonated drinks and alcohol are not a great mixtures at the end of the nite by your toliet....and especially cheap alcohol! 2. don't mix w/ fruit juice... the citric acid probably will upset ur tummy. and 3. i wouln't suggest beer (HOPS) bc it makes u more bloated and frequent trips to bathroom...at least for me. As for me when i drink, i drink qality scotch or vodka on the rocks...keep it simple and straight. i find myself having a great time and not worring about the bathroom. of course this is my experience and hopefully u will find what fits best...when in need of a drink or just have one.

Jimbobball, Since 2006 i' ve been taking it alittle easy when it comes to alcohol. With my Colitis i can never be sure what triggers things to happen. Just take things slower, and know how your body responds to things when you're tossing one back. Remember cold beverages can cause you to get a really bad moving expirence. Trust me i know lol. I still have a beer every now and then, i just don't feel the need to go over board. Hangovers are one thing but filling your pants is a whole other thing.

How you doing? I am a Navy Chief...a Sailorman! In our Navy song, "Anchors Aweigh," theres a verse in there..."Drink to the foam!" Ive been in the Navy for 12 years now and I was diagnosed two years ago. I live my life to the fullest....and when I drink, I drink a lot. I hate that Bowl God...when I see him that tells me that I was mixing too many drinks. I usually stick to liquor. Usually Wiskeys and Cognacs. My only advice to you is know your body. I would say I never went out drinking during a flare up but that would probably be a lie! Know your limits. LOL! And dont drive!
Have fun!

With my colitis I can drink... but after one or two shots I'm swallowing hard to keep myself from getting sick - I put it down, my stomach tries to send it right back up.
Additionally, hangovers? They SUCK for those of us with stomach problems. Oh good grief. I've had hangovers lasting from 3 days to a week, after a couple of shots. Extreme stomach pain, diarrhea, all of the extremely fun things like that.
So be veeeery careful and when you're worshipping the porcelain God, remember you chose to try it lol.

I totally agree with what Sara said. Just experiment and see what you can handle. Take it easy on the beer bongs:)

I can feel your frustration because I just finished college and that was something I wondered too. With me, I drink occasionally and I'm fine but I'm sure if you did it all the time and over did it then you would be sick. With me though, I can't drink beer at all because my colitis kicks in, but I can do some hard alcohols. I would just slowly experiment and see whats ok for you. Good luck and enjoy college!
