SIDE EFFECTS OF 6 MP

Thu, February 19, 2009 1:00 AM

DOES ANYONE TAKE 6 MP AS PART OF THEIR DAILY ROUTINE?  AND IF SO, HAVE YOU EVER EXPERIENCED ANY HORRIBLE SIDE EFFECTS LIKE VOMITING, HEADACHES AND JOINT AND MUSCLE PAIN?

I've been on 6mp for almost 2 1/2 years. At the beginning I had a lot of trouble with nausea, still do randomly sometimes, but it got better after being on the meds for a while. I've noticed I get headaches more frequently and my joints have been achy/sore some but most of that can be controlled with some tylenol or aleve. Every now and then I suffer from fatigue, mostly when my blood levels are off. But it seems to be worth it compared to how things were when I was on Pentasa, which did nothing but make me feel worse. The 6mp has let me live a relatively normal life compared to some other people's stories.

I just started taking 6-MP a few weeks ago, and so far the worst thing has been the weekly blood draws. I hate needles!!! I haven't experienced any nausea, I do get occasional headaches but they go away with just half the regular dose of tylenol. I've had some pretty bad joint pain in the middle of the night/morning but I had been under the impression that was from coming off such a high dose of prednisone. Anyways, so far it hasn't been bad and my blood values are all in the healthy range.

I've been on 6MP daily for 2 yrs; dose recently increased due to flare up.  I had terrible nausea the first few months, it tapered off eventually though can come back to haunt me without notice.  The recent increase (plus addition of a couple other meds) has caused the nausea again, and muscle cramps.  I try not to take any of it on an empty stomach, but I've never been a fan of breakfast.  The goal is to try to take on food at whatever point you feel you can handle it, and eat whatever is appetizing at that particular moment, because you have to strike while the iron's hot.  Bananas help my muscle aches and give me enough base in my belly to handle taking a 6MP.  I can also handle some types of cheese on occasion, and with crackers also give me abase to handle 6MP.  I'm not sure if you're supposed to eat those things with 6MP, but it's worked for me, especially when I'm not up to eating an entire meal at any point during the day.  make sure you take on water.  Also getting some cool/fresh air can help if you can sit outside a bit.

Hang in there.
