Help please, pain question

Sat, March 07, 2009 3:21 PM

Greetings,
I am new to the board and I hope this isn't a "repeat" topic. I searched some archives, but didn't find exactly what I was looking for.
My question is this, does anyone else with UC find sex painful?  I have found that during the last few months or so, intercourse is painful-- sharp pains are sent up through my pelvic area, nearly to my ribcage.
I had a hysterectomy in February of 2008 (all but my ovaries out) and was diagnosed with UC in March of the same year, I also have Fibromyalgia  which was diagnosed in 2001. Upon healing from the hysterectomy and getting my UC under control, there was no pain with sex at all. The pain just started a month or so ago. However, I didn't notice any UC "flare-up" symptoms (diarreah, bloating, tiredness, joint pain and the like) until the last few weeks...
I went to my OB/GYN and she said that there is nothing gynecological that could be contributing to the pain. However, her ultra-sound tech said my bowels were "going crazy" during the exam, almost to the point that she was unable to find my ovaries. Whatever that means???  (it was a vaginal u/s), which was also painful when moved the wand to find the ovaries...

Long story short, I am wondering if I am always going to have pain when I am intimate with my husband...I already have so much guilt in regard to our relationship because a lot of the time I am too tired, and hurt too bad to even be intimate. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Im also new to the board.  Just joined today, since feeling very overwhelmed today about UC.  I also have pain with sex, and pain with standing, holding my children, almost anything I do I have pain with.  I finally went to a new doctor(cause my old one said it was NORMAL!)  New Doc isn't so sure I have just UC, maybe Crohn's and UC or celiac disease.  You may want to find a new gastro. but dont take my advice.  I was just fed up and have had no relief from any med combo or anything for 4 years.  I just want to feel better.

Anyway, I find when Im in control of the intimacy it doesnt hurt as much.  Dont know if this is helpful, but it works for me.

Thanks for the link.  I now have to decide which doctor to talk to. My gyno thinks the problem is related to the colitis, but she didn't have any suggestions for what to do about it...I don't know if I'd be comfortable talking to my Gastro doc about this or not. On the other hand, I'm not sure if my primary care doc would have any more knowledge about the problem (solution) than my Gyno did. I guess I'm just rambling now....thanks for the quick response. It's nice to know we aren't alone in the world....

Yep.  Since my CD inflammation is now attacking other areas of my body, I would not be surprised if your area down there isn't affected by your UC also (I thinks that's what you said you have).

If you haven't already, try eliminating sugar, yeast, carbonated drinks, raw veggies and any tomato products from your diet.  This will help with the bladder/urinary areas and may alleviate some of the pain.  Just a suggestion.
