I was diagnosed with Crohn's in May of 07. So far I've had one significant flare up that lasted at its worst about 3 months. Things have "calmed down" now and I definitely have a better idea of what my triggers are. I continue to try to stay away from triggers and take care of myself but I still have this looming thought in the back of my head that a random flare-up could show up at anytime. My questions are:
1) What's the longest have you gone or have you heard of anyone else going withOUT a flare?
2) Also, have you ever just experienced a "random" flare when you seemed to be taking care of yourself? Do you usually sense small warnings before one comes?

I have gone for many long periods without more than small flares. Usually if something seemed random, I later realize there was a trigger I didn't realize, usually a food. I work with a Chinese herbal doctor about what foods are most irritating, and taking his medicine. I find this helps a lot.
Reply posted for maelee.I have flares that require hospitalization and I have mini flares that I can deal with w/o going to the hospital. My initial diagnosis was Crohns, and it was in 1969, was hospitalized in 1992, again in December of 2006, and again in April of 2007, I have mini flares on an average of three times a year, usually related to diet, I sleep for hours, have severe headaches, usually dont have to take prednisone to get out of it. I do drink copius amounts of water and eat eggs and toast and I usually come out of it in three days. But I have the good kind of Crohns. My triggers are: side hurts where the Crohn's is located, I get angry at nothing, I am so tired that I could sleep in the shower while taking one, feel feverish, loose my appetite.

I was diagnosed with CD in 2007 and I have been in remission now for 1.5 weeks. I didn't know how to act. I wasn't in pain, it wasn't normal for me to feel ok. In terms of how long, that's hard to say. I've heard some say 3 mos, other 5 years. I, personally, believe it's all about diet.
I do find that I am "waiting" for the next flare to hit. Thought it was going to happen yesterday, but I just had a healthy bm - that's all! LOL
I just smile alot now, enjoy each new day and try and put those thoughts behind me.
