COFFEE!?

Mon, July 06, 2009 12:00 AM

Hi everyone.Like you all I've had to make some dietary changes in my life.  I am a little ocd and into routines.  That being said, I love my morning coffee routine.  After a run, I stretch, grab my water and drive to Dunkin Donuts for a large dark with cream and no sugar.  I love coffee but I know it's the part of feeling normal and being able to do the things I enjoy is another reason for me having it.  ( I have chrons and ulcerative colitis).  During a flare I obviously stay away from coffee.  I do not like hot tea because it brings me back to when I was sick with a cold, stomach issue, etc.  Any suggestions to change to something other than coffee?  I can tolerate it when I'm feeling good.  Thanks so much!

Okay, so do we enjoy our coffee when we're feeling good like "normal" people so we feel "normal"?  Aaagh!!!!  I don't want to give it up...yet!

Have a great night/day.

Ask any GI doctor about this - coffee, decaf (which has caffeine in it) - tea and soft drinks - and they will all most likely say to stop them.  Caffeine.  An excerpt from an article I read:

"However, there is a boat-load of common knowledge that may be convincing enough for some to avoid caffeine if they are living with Crohn's Disease. For example, it is a well known fact that caffeine produces a laxative effect, so if diarrhea is already a problem, this could worsen existing symptoms. Caffeine also elevates stress hormones and causes blood to be diverted from the stomach, which can worsen digestion. Caffeine is also highly acidic, and as a result, it may create stomach upset. And finally, caffeine acts as a diuretic which can lead to dehydration. Staying hydrated can be particularly important if you are living with Crohn's Disease."

Before I was diagnosed coffee was the first thing I would get in the morning. When I was in a flare I stopped drinking it, I would just drink some juice or something like that to wake me up. Now I drink half decaf and half regular with non-lactose creamer (Silk) and I don't get as sick from it.
