overweight...

so i feel sort of backwards because i'm not sure how this happened, like i've always been a little bit on the heavier side but still within normal range but i just ended 2 months of steroids and suddenly it hit me on how much overweight i am, i mean its not horrible, but enough were i'm not happy with it, i'm about 20-30 lbs over what i think i should be (that being about 150-160) so i know like 15 of it is steroid weight but still....

here is the problem though most ibd patients have issues being underweight, and just like you guys my entire gut ends up back in the toliet right after i eat so you think i would loose weight but nope

and ok normal people would just say exercise more.....ahhhhh....i'm severe crohn's if i have extra energy it goes towards like cleaning or doing school work, don't get me wrong i do go out and exercise but its so hard for me to do heavy impact stuff, i do tai chi twice a week and every once in a while go play tennis with friends but idk its not enough. also eating healthy i try to do but like all this normal "healthy" stuff like salads, apples, ect is so *** my gut! fruit is normally pretty good cause it is mostly soft and i can do veggies cooked. anyways you see my issues. advice? similar stories/feelings?

Hey,

I know exactly how you feel. I gained 34 pounds in the past two months. It is a miserable experience because I know how emotional it can make you feel. Weight Watchers is the key. When I first joined I was 85 pounds over weight. I hit my goal weight and maintained it until I was diagnosed with crohn's, I had quit because i was too frustrated. I recently started Weight Watchers again and i feel great and back in control. They teach you it is not what you eat...it is how much you eat. I find it helpful to actually go to the meetings and weigh in at the center. Good Luck and  I hope everything works out for the better!

I am an RN as well as a crohns patient.  You idea about exersize is righ on the mark, I  suggest you continue what you are doing but add in a little cardio.  i ride my recumbant bike st a low level about 3-4 times weekly, even if I'm feeling lousy or having a flare.  One of the other things you can try is meditation, it helps withthe anxiety we all know too well about.  i hope this is helpful,

I have been on Prednisone at 50mg for the last 6 months. It has, too, added a little extra bagage to me. I have put on about 35 pounds. My GI is weening me off the steroids 5mg per week and hopefully I will be able to lose the weight. I have tried while on the meds to exercise and diet, but like you, any energy that I may have goes towards other stuff so exercising is when I can, not an every day thing.

Good luck with your Crohns and weight loss. I am right there with you!

I too put on weight after my diagnosis and surgery.  I eventually went to weight watchers where I learned portion control and making better choices.  It worked for me, I lost 40 pounds in 6 months and have been following their plan since 2002 and have kept all the weight off WITHOUT EXERCISE.  And I can eat whatever I choose as long as it fits in my daily food points budget.  I rarely eat salad or fruit because it goes right through me.     Good Luck to you!!
