Hi

My name is Laura. I have Crohns. But as I read all of these posts I feel really bad for everyone. I have a mild case, and am not as bad off as others are. Having said that, I do have my own issues I am dealing with. I don't just have Crohn's disease; I also have hypoglycemia. I have had it for 20 years or so. The dietary treatments for these diseases are at opposite ends of the spectrum, so I have to find a balance between the two. I can't do a low residue/low fiber diet, or my blood sugars will go out of whack! And the things I can eat don't seem to make any sence.

I can eat oatmeal or oat cereal, but not bran flakes or all-bran. I can eat whole wheat bread and brown rice, but not whole wheat pasta.  I can eat cheese, yogurt, butter, and sour cream, but I can't eat milk, cream, or ice cream. I can eat raw fruits, but veggies have to be cooked. I can eat sauted foods, but I can't eat deep fried. I can manage about a third to half a cup of beans, but not much more. I can eat pretty much any meat. I can eat a small handful of nuts or popcorn when I feel ok (being careful with the hulls, of course), but when I am in a flare I back off on those. I can get away with one cookie, but it is so hard to eat just one! Everyone is different, I guess.

Good luck on finding your balance

We stick with a low residue/low fiber diet, and try to stay with organic when possible.   I have also found through the years of trial and error that smaller/more frequent meals work well.

Keep a food journal to make narrowing down any problematic foods.  It is really not a "diet", just a lifestyle.......you'll find what works best for you, everyone is diffent.    My daughter has learned how to "cheat" too.

Good luck to you.

I am on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. It works great for me! It is very strict though and if you want to see results, you have to follow it perfectly. I noticed a difference in symptoms after the the first day of being on it. That was 6 months ago and now I've felt well enough to travel to Las Vegas for a week. It does take awhile to get rid of the symptoms though, don't expect them to be gone over night. Although I noticeably felt better after my first day, I was still bleeding and still had diarrhea. That stuff didn't start going away until after a few months. So if you're going to do SCD (which I highly recommend, I'm completely off my meds now) you must really stick with it for awhile to see the results. Check out my blog shalenesuclife.blogspot.com and you can see my experiences with it.
