I actually just started the process. Let's keep in touch about this...if you want, you can email me at debbates101@yahoo.com
You can get a lot of information at disability.gov. I know that social security officials will tell you that if you use a lawyer to file for you, you have a much greater chance of being approved. I wasn't really sure why there was a benefit to using a firm to file for me if I could do it on my own until I realized how convaluted a process it really is. There are two types and one is impacted on whether or not you're still working and the other is better if you're not working...it's all very complicated and very confusing.
The firm I contacted takes clients on a pay-if-approved basis. If your case is not approved, you don't pay a dime. If you are approved, you pay a fee that is set by the SS system and is taken out of that first check. SS will write a check to you, and one to the lawyer. There is A LOT of work that has to be done to file and if you are denied, the appeal takes a really long time--they said 15 months nation-wide right now. From what they were saying, with disability you do get paid from the last day you worked--it sounds like you haven't worked for awhile.
I only know the basics, but my best friend is on disability for Fibromyalgia after she lost her job because she was missing too much work. I hate to have to be in this position and am really hesitant to even do it, but I'm close to running out of FMLA and I'm not close to being ready to return to work! I don't know what else to do! The consultation is free, so I figured it can't hurt to talk to them. They said they wouldn't take my case if they don't feel it is strong, but then she also said the only cases they really turn away are people who come in and have not even seen a doctor and people who are using illegal drugs.
My appointment is Wednesday. Let me know if you find out anymore information and I'll let you know what they say...

There is a good article on this site about filing. I do not remember where it is but do a search. It can be difficult to get disability. I have not tried. One of the things they consider is the type of work you do.

I would contact the CCFA office and see if they could point you in the right direction.

Try chatting with someone in the ADA office about it. I am sure that they can answer any questions or concerns that you may have. I was looking into it myself, not about filing that is, but how it pertains to the workplace.
I have been having some issues at work lately, since I have been recently diagnosed about two months ago. This flare up just will not seem to go away, and I have been absent on average about two days a month since may. I bring in the proper paperwork and am here on days that I can handle it. But I have a feeling that my boss is getting frustrated and just does not understand or have the compassion.
Good luck and I hope that everything starts to look up! Talk to you soon.

I think it is definitely worth looking into. I filed for SS Disability for my mom a few years ago (not for CD/UC), but it wasn't all that difficult to do. A number of forms had to be filled out by her various docs, employer, etc., but it wasn't too long and the checks started coming in. They actually did a portion retroactively (due to my own lack of filing sooner - who knew?).
I wish you luck.

I wish I could give some positive info. All I can offer is there are lawyers who specialize in SS Disability. I would see if any give a free consultation. Usually they don't take cases that they don't think they can win. Good Luck, Marilyn
