I have been on the SCD diet for close to a month now and was feeling great.....then I had to have a CT Enterography scan two days ago and I think the barium sulfate I had to drink had sugar in it! I have felt awful ever since with abdominal pain, bloating, gas, big D, the works. Grrrrr I was feeling so good too! Is anyone on the SCD diet and know if even a small amount of sugar (well I had to drink 900ml of that junk) can cause an instant setback like this? And if so, how long will it take to get back to normal???? I have recently started taking my Asacol again (since I walked around for four months with a partial blockage and didn't realize it. Scared me into starting the SCD and seeing a specialist)

OMG I just had the same thing and was wondering if the stuff I drank for that scan could have affected me - I was feeling pretty good the days leading up to that scan - then wow that day and the 3 days since - even today day 4 - I am still feeling 'off' - pain and sensitive. I was not truly on the SCD but I was following much of it also.

I posted you a message but it disappeared into space.
Just to say get your stricture symptoms checked soon but yes a tiny bit of sugar can have a big effect at the start of scd. I have used scd for four years (uc) and in the first year or two the tiniest bit of sugar (usually hidden in salad dressing or a sauce) caused D and itchy skin a few hours later and this sometimes lasted for days.
Now I can go out for an occasional meal and break some rules without problems but if I am careless for several meals the symptoms return after four days. I can control these quickly by being extra strict. Overall I think that the diet can relieve symptoms quite quickly but that the real underlying healing is much slower so don't be tempted to stop medication too soon if you have success with the diet.
Hope you feel better soon.
