I have just noticed a possibly relationship between an increase in crohn's symptoms and dental cleanings. Last year, after my dental cleaning- all my crohn's symptoms came back in full force. I finally got in remission after 6 months and starting Cimzia. I just went for my annual cleaning again- and suprise- immediatly symptomatic again. I of course did not make this connection until this more recent cleaning. Has anyone else experienced this? Thoughts?

It's only a guess...but after you have dental cleaning, the bacteria generated by the cleaning process can get to your system. My husband free braces suffers from mitro valve prolapse. He's required to get an antibiotic before cleaning his teeth. I'm curious if the bacteria could affect people suffering from IBD in the same way?? ?

I seriously follow all of the instructions and suggestions offered by my family dentist Redondo Beach at http://newsmilesdentistry.com/. I brush my teeth twice a day and never forget to floss as well. In fact, I am got a list of foods that are good for having stronger teeth and have these foods very often.

I work as a dental hygienist, and I was also diagnosed with Crohn's disease about 5 years ago, so your thoughts interest me very much. This is the first time I've heard of a person linking flare ups to dental cleanings. However, when you mention what you have noticed there are a few things that come to mind. The dental office can be a very stressful place for many people; I don't know if this is the case for you, but if so, it would make sense.
One of the other considerations would be the fact that during a dental cleaning there is potential for bacteria to enter our blood stream. In healthy individuals this poses a minimal risk for any problems, however I could understand how a person taking immune suppression drugs could have slightly more risk. There are certain cases when it is recommended that patients take antibiotics prior to dental procedures; as dental professionals we generally make these recommendations based on what physicians and medical organizations recommend. I'm sorry to say that I have not seen any studies/ information on this particular topic. Dentists can hesitate to recommend use of antibiotics if they are unfamiliar with a topic due to the fact that they don't want to promote antibiotic resistance either. I would encourage you to discuss this in depth with your gasteroenterologist to get the best conclusion. If your physician thinks an antibiotic prior to dental visits is something that would benefit you, they can write an Rx for you too.

Maybe you're just a rabid anti-dentite.
If you don't have anxiety about the dentist, its probably bacteria related. The problem is when you recognize something as a pattern, doctors will discount your opinion bc you didn't do a scientific study. I say go with your gut and either take an antibiotic before the dentist or some acidopholus or something that will fight off bad bacteria and see if it helps. I dunno if acidopholus will do that but you get the idea.
When I was on remicade, 2 days after my initial dose i got a gum infection, and i pretty much got bronchitis 3-4 days after every dose and they told me it wasn't related. I never had a gum infection in my life before that. I also had weird tingling pains in my legs that I couldn't sleep from. They said it wasn't related. I came off the stuff and no more leg tingling. The bronchitis I still get sometimes after dosing on Cimzia but I'm smart enough now to know its related and stay out of public places for like a week after dose.

I had the same thing happen to me in the last year. I went in March, started a flare up, then in October I had a really bad flare up, which is not responding to tons of meds. I asked my dentist about this and she basically brushed it off, but said she'd look into it.

That's an interesting situation. Is there anything else surrounding the cleanings that you do differently? Perhaps rewarding yourself with something else that triggers a flare? Maybe you have anxiety over going to the dentist, and that causes your stomach acids to increase, irritating your condition? Does any of this sound familiar?
