Dating and IBD

Sun, December 28, 2008 1:00 AM

I did a search on this topic in the forums and surprisingly didn't find any posts.

I would just like to open this topic of "Dating with IBD" up to people's experiences, suggestions for when/how to divulge our condition, etc.

I look forward to reading your responses.

I am only 22 and so, obviously, I love to date. You can't let it get in the way. You don't have to tell everyone you meet about it. I suggest trying to go out on a few different dates. Tell the ones you really like what you have in a casual way, and let it go from there. Most guys our age don't even know what it is, if they care enough, they'll look it up and respect the adversity you have to deal with everyday. You'll be surprised the responses you get. I've never had a guy not completely respect what I have to go through, and not once have they ever stopped thinking I was beautiful or amazing. You'll see the same thing, you just have to give it a chance!

I was really glad to read your story. I just started dating someone & did exactly what you did, sent him to the CCFA site to read about it. it's just too hard to explain esp. to someine you don't know for long. We'll see what happens, he seems supportive. having a bad nite & this is the place to be. Good luck to you

A couple of months after I found out I had colitis, me and my boyfriend of 4 years parted ways.

I get a lot of guys phone numbers, and I get asked out alot of dates and stuff. Its just I can't really see myself dating someone, having colitis has killed my self confidence.

I am so glad to hear you have found a loving partner in life!

My son just had surgery for an abcess near his tailbone--a fistula.  Did you have that?  I am wondering how your recovery went?  He is on day three post-op and feeling ok but sore and really really tired.  I have to take him back to college on Sun. but will stay in his town a few days to see how he is doing and am setting him up with a wound-care nurse.

thanks...it is also nice to hear that you have had a child and are managing ok!

I know there has been several posts on here regarding this issue and I have replied to some.  I know when I met my now boyfriend I was just honest and up front in the beginning.  I thought it best to be that way and give him the opportunity to research for himself and make the decision on whether he wanted to get emotionally involved with someone who could end up or would end up sick at some point in our relationship.  He did exactly what I had hoped and read all he could on CD.  There is no shame in having this disease and I see no reason to hide it.  It is a fact of life for us and it isnt going to go away as much as we would like for it to and it isnt fair to hide it from someone we are hoping to have in our life.  If someone truly cares and wants to be with you and wants to have the opportunity to know you then they should be privy to this information.  I would rather people know and understand that sometimes I may make a b-line to the restroom or that there may be times that yeah we had plans but those have to change because hey my gut decided that it didnt like me today.  It is easier for them to deal with and understand if they know the facts going in and dont learn them after you get sick.  That is just my thoughts on it.  By the way I now have a 2 year old with my boyfriend and recently went through surgery for an abcess and he didnt run and he isnt scared.
