No Family Emotional Support

Wed, February 11, 2009 12:28 PM

Hi Everyone,

Just posting looking for a sympathetic ear. I was diagnosed with pancolitis in 2007 and am currently on 40mg prednisone, 8 Asacol, and misc. supplements. Getting yet another flare into remission, and hoping to wean off the prednisone (starting next week). In my family I don't get much emotional support and it's just really bringing me down. Normally I'm the "strong" one, pretty laid back, and don't let a lot of small things get to me. I've recently joined a support group and just trying to reach out through these forums. I've explained to my husband and children when I'm not feeling well that I need more care and understanding, but lately I've just been getting comments from my husband on how irritable I am. It really bothers me because no sooner do I tell him how I'm feeling then he has to tell me how he's not feeling well and all the pressure and stress he is under from work, etc. Thanks for letting me vent.

Hi asohn,

Thanks for the reply. I really needed it because today is just not a good day for me emotionally and I know that you and others on these boards know exactly how I feel. My husband had gone to one dr. appointment, but has mentioned about attending the support group with me (so maybe that will help). Just giving me a different perspective on the whole situation definitely helps (about his stress and worry). Thanks for helping me not feel so alone

I am so sorry to hear you are not getting the support you need from your family.  I think one of the hardest things of this disease is to explain how awful you really really feel.  And since our illness is on the inside there often isn't a physical reminder how sick we are.  Does your husband come to dr appt with you- or can he attend the support group with you-maybe that will help him understand.  Also he is probably under alot of stress too- and is worried about you and might unfortnuately be venting to the one person that doesn't need to be vented at.  I know my illness has put so much stress on my husband and sometimes they just have to melt a bit too.  Your meds might be putting you on edge- I know the steroids make me rather edgy.
