How do you get past the "why me" stage?

Wed, April 01, 2009 1:43 PM

When I am at my worst, I am always asking, "why me."  Then later I feel guilty, knowing full well that others on this globe are suffering much more than I am. I hate this disease, but I know there are other diseases far worse than CD.  How do you get over the "why me" and the guilt of it all?  I can at least say that CD has made me more sympathetic to the suffering of others.

Wow, the profanity filter really ate that one up, eh? Decapitalized all over the place... Funny thing is, only one of the ***'s is profanity.

i was diagnosed as a teenager, and i think that should have been really *** me, but it wasn't. i didn't feel much self-pity because i knew it was something i could live with and live through.

it was hard to get perspective, but i focused *** making myself better and living as happily as possible (because, really, *** normalcy).

You are right that other people have it worse. But remember, god only gives us what we can handle. Often when I get sick, I yell at god. Certain words I can't type. Have faith. He doesn't care if you yell and scream at him. Me, why. F U Man, But he did die for us. If you need someone to yell at it is him. No one in your house (husband, wife,or kids).  I have had Crohns for 12 years. I am still trying to figure this crap out. I was diagnosed when I was 14. Hard thing to deal with when you where entering high school. If I can handle being expelled from high school and still be here. You can.

Crohn's is a real pain, but there are many worse diseases to have. The thing that is hardest for me to accept is how adversely the disease and meds can influence my emotions.

I use to feel the same way you do...."why me?"  In 2006 I had a benign brain tumor removed and was diagnosed with crohns in 2007 at the age of 54.....so when I go for my Remicade infusion every 6 weeks I see what would be worse than crohns.  There are  many fellow sufferers that have infusions 2-3x a week ,every week for 8-10 hrs each treatment...and they've been doing it alot longer....so when you put it in perspective....this is not the worst disease......need to think positive....negative brings negative....

I had already adopted a healthy eating plan, so this was a complete surprise. I think the initial shock and depression are normal and I certainly struggle with this too. However, I did not ask "why me" specifically because I have friends who are good people but who also struggle with situations I would not wish on anybody. This is one of life's mysteries. I did realize that learning to deal with this in the best way possible was an important lesson and I am striving to do this on all levels- physically and emotionally.

There are days I deal emotionally and others, not so well. I was always very independent but I have learned that I have to have emotional support from my close friends, but also to give back. One of my friends is a recent widow, and I try to support her as well.

I am very impressed by those on this board who have learned about healing through diet, and emotional healing as well. I believe it is important to follow my doctor's care plan, but also to explore ways I can promote healing as well. Everything we do to help is important. I did a lot of exercise and yoga and I am trying to get back into that routine as much as I can.

It helps to have faith too.... whatever yours is.... I know this is tough, believe me, I have my moments. It helps to post your feelings here too and know that others understand.

It's funny, when I ask that, I immediately hear the words, "why not?"  It could happen to anyone and we were the chosen ones.  Many lessons to learn from this journey, many times we want to beat ourselves up for eating and drinking what we shouldn't (up until 2 mos ago, I never drank water, now it is the only thing I can drink and not be bothered by a flare up).   It's all part of the bigger plan, just a matter now of we learn to accept it, learn from it, and move forward.

I had to dig deep within my soul to work through this one and I am glad I did.  I have met some incredible people, including doctors along the way who have opened my eyes and many doors to looking at this from a completely different perspective.  My urologist is the one I credit for saving my life with the IC diet.  I swear it put my Crohn's into remission.

And I do have my days where I fall off the wagon, did so this week and paying the price, but as fast as it hits, it goes away after a few hundred trips to the bathroom.  LOL

Learn from this.  Find the strength within your soul to continue and remain positive.  it's there, just waiting to be discovered.

Once I started feeling better and then putting myself into remission by diet and nutrition the "why me" stage turned to...

Anger "Why didn't my doctor tell me about this?

I know accept what I have and it drives to cure myself and get med free to shove it back in the face of all the people who say "There is no cure" or "No one knows how you get IBD"

I accept the fact that I helped create this IBD monster with years of a poor diet, antacids, OTC medicatons.  Antiboitics from my doctors did not help nor did other enviromental factors that were out of my control.

So today I try to help people with infomation I would of killed for when I was first told I had IBD.

Hang in there.
