Has anyone tried any of the tryciclic drugs for ibs?

My doctor prescribed Nortriptyline for my ibs symptoms which I know are caused by stress.  I also have crohn's and ulcerative colitis.  I was diagnosed almost three years ago with the crohn's and uc and just this week with ibs.  I'm just wondering if anyone has had any good/bad experiences with this?  I am also reading probably too much about weight gain from this medication and I really don't want to gain weight either.  Thanks!

Hi.  Thanks so much for your input.  How will I know when to call my dr.  if I feel like the 10mg (which is working well so far) needs to be upped?  Thanks!

I have been taking Nortriptyline since this past April (now on 25 mg) I have definitely noticed improvements with my IBS. The frequency of the morning cramping bathroom runs have decreased wonderfully. I still have uncomfort every now and then, however, this medication has made it more manageable. I haven't had any weight gain. If anything they say it can cause weight loss because it curbs your appetite. I'm still feeling kind of depressed, so I may even go up on dosage. I would recommend giving it a shot, even if you did gain a little weight, it is better then having to deal with the chronic abdominal pain and bathroom trips.

I have Crohn's,IBS abd Fibromyalgia I am taking the Nortriptylne for my fibro, I really havent noticed any side effects I take it at bedtime. I was on amitriptylne before that and noticed I was eating like a pig so I stopped it right away and went back down to my wieght I was at before I started taking it. I think its one of those things it is different for everybody.

a lot of people have had a lot of success with it! I can't take it, but I wish I could. There are some side effects. A friend of mine is having hair loss, but she didn't have weight gain. She went on it for fibromyalgia and depression, not IBD or IBS. You just have to be committed to really trying it for a certain length of time. it's not like other medications where you want to give up on it after two weeks. Good luck!
