At My Breaking Point

Thu, June 23, 2011 12:29 PM

I have been diagnosed with colitis for two years now. My doctor always said that I had colitis, not ulcerative colitis, and that he did not know exactly what to do with me. After trying a dozen different medications and being in terrible amount of pain I decided to get a second opinion. This new doctor is absolutly terrible but she did have my pathology reports reread and it was confirmed that I do indeed have ulcerative colitis. I am at my ultimate low right now. Last thursday I ended up in the doctors office crying my head of due to the pain. She told me to go to the hospital and would not help me. She also told me that she doesnt understand why I am in pain. I do not get these doctors, the big hosp in MN and CCFA both say you can having a terrible amount of pain from this...why do these doctors not know this??? Top it all off I am battling the insurance company to get me a doctor that can handle my case properly. I have been given the run around for the last two years from doctors without getting any relief just more and more pain and symptoms. I know I am not alone in this but I cant help but feel alone...

Be persistent with your insurance company and find out who you can write to as a critical/urgent patient appeal.  document in the appeal that your doctor does not believe in pain management with meds.  It can take time to get a new patient appointment, and then take time for them to get to know & feel comfortable with you.  So this part is urgent on the timetable.  If you have a GI specialist_ make sure that they know you are having difficulty finding the right primary care and they may be able to pitch hit for prescriptions and care of the issues they would normally advise you to see the primary for.  Your GI should be handling pain meds for your gut issues anyway.  If your specialist is someone you only see 2x a year and far from home...... get one you can have a stronger patient/dr relationship with.  And see if they have recommendations for primary care that they work well with already
It really helps to have all your folks on your team working together, you do get better care!

definately know how you feel. I've had docs who refused to see when I was pregnant and told me I'd have to deal with the flare until after my daughter was born and others who would NOT let me have an opinion for treatment plans. I was lucky that I could talk to my insurance about switching docs but there are a lot of good docs too. The one I see now is awesome.

Thank you very much! Unfortunately I had to go see this doctor again on Friday. I mentioned again my pain level and what it was like when I went in the previous week. She told me "yeah, the last time I saw you it looked like something was going to burst in you." She then told me that she does not believe in pain medication and that she refuses to prescribe it. All I could think about is, isnt doctors supposed to help you with your quality of life??? My insurance company is giving me a hard time right now on needing another doctor since it is my third, so I have been battling that. I have also filed an appeal to go out of state to the hosp in MN since they are supposed to be the leading facility of UC.

Yes, both of my doctors I have seen are specialists. My primary doctor also said the my first doctor was the top doctor under my insurance medical group.

are you seeing a specialist?  A GI physician or someone who specializes in IBD?

I am so sorry to hear you have had such bad doctors!!!  Can you call your insurance company and hopefully get someone who is compassionate and listen to you that you NEED a new Doctor?  A good DR is key with this disease.  That is INSANE the DR would not treat you at her office and told you to go to the ER. PLEASE report her to your insurance company!!!  That just blows my mind!   I know the last thing you need to deal with when feeling sick is the insurance company but once you get over this hurdle and find a caring Dr, you will be on your way to feeling good again.  Hang in there!!
