I have come to the point where I need to have colon surgery to address my severe UC.
I have my surgical consult on May 1st. What questions do I ask?
What can I expect?

Sorry--I posed the wrong link for the US News Top Doctors database---here's the correct one:

By the way--if your colorectal surgeon is not planning a minimally invasive procedure, you might want to get a second opinion about your surgery.
You can find the best doctors in your area by using the US News Top Doctors database. Just type in "colon and rectal surgeons" in the "specialist" window, along with the other information requested, and a list of the top surgeons in your area will pop up.

You might ask your doctor if he/she is able to use a minimally invasive technique rather than traditional surgery--recovery time is faster.
See this video from a colorectal surgeon at the May Clinic--he talks about various surgical techniques for dealing with Crohn's:

CCFA has a brochure called Surgery for Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis www.ccfa.org/assets/pdfs/surgery_brochure_final.pdf. After you read this brochure, you should be able to develop a list of questions to ask the doctor. Some questions might include: What type of surgery is needed; is treatment with medication an option for my particular situation.
