I have server crohn's like 20+ ops, it does take time for your bowels to wake up sometime.

Just throwing this out there but gaming is one of my best pain meds over the years, keeps my mind off the pain and focus on something else.

I have a teenage son that has had similar surgery (lost colon and rectum) and currently suffers from great pain in his abdomen area.  he has had daily bouts of dizziness and nausea with some days including vomiting.  What has helped is Silver Solution and probiotics.  We did try the pill form of THC.  It immediately ate and ate, but he hated the side effects.

Have the doctors done a cat scan to see if he might be having an obstruction? I had these surgeries and had semi-similar issues that came and went, it took five years to find where the obstruction was happening in cat-scan and found where my ostomy was reduced was too narrow therefore resulting in a 4th surgery. His condition should not be this bad after these surgeries. My other concern is if it is positively diagnosed correctly, crohns is always a worry too. Hi There,

So sorry to hear your son is going through that. I also had blood clots in my portal vein (leading to liver) after my total colectomy/j-pouch surgery. I ALSO had an ileus at the same time they discovered the blood clots (an air blockage in the small intestine). I was not able to keep down food and vomited every time I tried to eat. I needed to be re-hospitalized immediately and I was put on an NG tube until the ileus resolved. After my takedown surgery, I suffered a second blockage (a complete small bowel obstruction) and needed a third surgery to remove the scar tissue causing the blockage. I was also not able to eat/keep down food with that second blockage. I have had many an NG tube since my surgeries, and they are not fun but it sounds like that is perhaps what your son needs. He will be fine in the end, he'll get through it! I am almost three years post-op now and living a very full life (just completed a triathlon, in fact!).

Please message me if I can help in any way. Your son's situation sounds remarkably similar to mine. Sounds like ileus+blood clots (which seem to manifest together, or they did for me anyway...)

I'm very very sorry to hear about your son's difficulty.  I also had this problem after having my colon removed ten years ago.  I was heavily medicated so I don't remember it with complete clarity although I do remember I would vomit after eating and was constantly in pain and nauseated.  My doctors put in a suction NG tube for a few weeks and started to back it out slowly as my own body began to take over the processes and coming out of the GI stasis.  It took about two weeks of being completely NPO before this started to occur.  I did have a PIC line in and got TPN.  I seem to remember that when I was feeling better with pain moving around was said to help with getting my stomach to start working correctly again.  Mostly I think it just took time and resting the GI system.  Forcing the issue with food was not the way to go in my case so NPO helped a lot.  The suction helped so I wasn't vomiting anymore when it came to bile build up.  When he is feeling better gradually add back clear liquids then full liquids and then foods that are easy to digest.  At this point I have very few problems other than my fistulas and my life has been changed for the better having had the surgery even with the initial problems.  I hope things go well for you and your family! -Jenn

I am truly sorry to hear of your Son's issues with the surgery ordeal.  I too have been diagnosed with Crohns 
disease.  Although I still have my colon, three years ago my Dr. performed an ileostomy (supposed to be temporary) to help with all the symptoms you Son is dealing with.  I recently found out my colon is totally destroyed now and I will have my ileostomy or similiar for the remainder of my life.  My Doctors assured  me that the temporary ileostomy would allow my colon to heal itself and I would stop losing weight (weighed 90 lbs. at time of procedure) and the diarrehea would stop.   Three year s later, I am told I will have the ileostomy bag forever and also have to have my colon removed this year.

 I had difficulty keeping food down and was not able to eat any quantity of food.  Have you tried Ensure?  They offer a powder which can be added to milk, juice, whatever type of drink your Son can take.  Also, have Ensure ready made drinks in vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate.  All of these Ensure products are available at Walmart, CVS pharmacy, and Walgreens pharmacy.

Sorry to hear he is (hopefully 'was' now since this reply is late) having so much trouble. Has his GI suggested a gastric emptying study? If not and he hasn't gotten one, please ask. However, hope this suggestion is a mute point and that he has since recovered. Take care!!

Has your doctor referred you to a licensed nutritionist with experience in IBD cases?

SORRY TO HAER ABOUT ABOUT YOUR SONS PROBLEMS. HAVE HIM TRY BOOST AND OTHER PRODUCTS LIKE THAT.  ALSO, I HAVE FOUND THAT GATORADE IS GOOD FOR  THIS PROBLEM. I ALSO AGREE  WITH OTHERS ON THIS POST THAT YOU SHOULD GO WITH BABY FOOD AND SOUP AND BUILD FROM THAT PLATFORM.

I know this sounds "gross", but it may work for you.  I was down to 92 pounds until diagnosis.  I had surgery, and ended up going through what I will call baby steps.  I had to learn to eat baby food, baby cereal, ensure for drinks, and then eventually I could eat other food such as the ones mentioned.  My thoughts were, "if I need to start over, then this is the only way to grow up."  Be careful though.  As older folks we tend to eat salt, pepper, sugars that are not part of a normal infant diet.  I craved them so badly.  Even today I find sugars will irritate me, so I go the "raw" sugar route.  The brown unprocessed sugar.

I'm sorry that your son isn't doing well after the surgery. Have you tried giving him any probiotics?
I would recommend vsl# 3 probiotic. It is the best one out there & a little expensive but it's worth getting it. 
You should also give him Manuka honey from New Zealand (Amazon.com) which help heal his digestive tract after surgery. 
He can have as much honey as he wants since it will also give him energy.
Turmeric capsules which is also an anti-inflamatory like Manuka honey. This could be found @ any supermarket in the 
Herb/spice section. It has no side effects so give him this 3/day. I hope he feels better soon :)
