I was diagnosed with UC in 2008. I have been unresponsive to all medication, been in and out of hospitals, and have spent a great deal of time on steroids and pain medication. Because of this, I seeked more specialized doctors, and we have decided surgery is really my only option. I am schedule to have the first of two surgeries for my "j-pouch" surgery. My questions is, how do I deal with the financial part of this? I have two young children and a mortgage to pay, so how am I supposed to make all that work when I cant work for at least a month after each surgery when I have no savings and live paycheck paycheck. Not getting the surgery isn't an option as I will just end up in the hospital again and may need the surgery in an emergency basis which is not wanted at all. I can't get disability because I won't be out of work for a year, which is their minimum. So how do other people make this work? My doctor said I would get the first surgery, be out for about a month, and then be able to work two months until my next surgery - then I would be out about another month.
How do other people do this? Are there financially assistance programs I'm just not seeing?
