Hi all - I had ileo 30 years ago for chrons . It's only ever affected my large bowel but I also have arthritis which is linked to the chrons. The surgeons never removed the rectum at the time as I was quite ill and the thought was it would NOT develop into cancer. Now medical opinion is different and my surgeons feel I should have rectum out. It does cause me trouble but nothing I can't live with. My situation is complicated as I also need a hysterectomy for a long standing problem and so when they do hysterectomy they will remove the rectum at the same time, I am very afraid of this surgery as I have had complications inthe past although that was 20 years ago, I am also afraid of doing nothing and then developing cancer.<br /> my mother has had brain haemorhage and I help care for her so this adds to my worries. I feel very down over all of this and wondered if anyone had any opinions or thoughts .. Thank you xxx

As long as they know they have UC, they should do a flexible sigmoidoscopy, or something along the lines, annually, to check for rectal cancer. If they do it annually, and you develop cancer, then they should be able to catch it on time, and remove your rectum only if you develop cancer. You should be able to keep your rectum if it's not causing you problems right now.

After diagnosed with Chron's 10 years ago, I undergone a surgery where my colon and appendix was removed. It was the only option that doctor gave me after suffering from severe symptoms. If you think that medication no longer working, its better that you decide to undergo a surgery.
