I've had UC for more than 15 years. I'm a 37 year old father of 2 very active kids. After seeing an area of dysplasia, my doctor says it's time to have the surgery. My UC isn't too bad......typically 6-8 trips per day. I'm on lot's of meds to get it to this stage of being somewhat under control. That said, I'm scheduled for surgery next week and really nervous about if I'm making the right decision. They are planning a 3-stage surgery with j-pouch. Please weigh in with your experience and thoughts.
I also had an area of dysplasia. Four GI specialists strongly recommended surgery. However, I starting taking a Chinese herb called Qing Dai and a drug called Low Dose Naltrexone (see Treatments - Chinese Herb & LDN). During my last colonoscopy the doctor found no inflammation and was able to cut out the area of dysplasia. The doctors said I had about a 30% chance of already having or getting colon cancer due to the dysplasia, but now there's no more talk of surgery and my current doctor recommends yearly colonoscopies. I'm also a strict vegan and more recently about 2/3 raw foods. I'm convinced that this diet is protective against cancer, in addition to other health benefits. Good luck!
