Is there anyone out there who is able to advise me or give their perspective on this procedure? I have UC. I have had it since 1996. I also have a blood disorder called poly si thema vera. This is a blood disorder where my bone marrow produces too many red blood cells which causes clots and poor circulation. In order to better manage the blood disorder, my doctors have repeatedly suggested reconstructive surgery for my colitis. The doctors have suggested sewing up my bottom and giving me a colostomy bag on my stomach. This seems severe to me and I am freaked out. I remember back in the 80's I worked as a nurse's aide in a nursing home and I cared for people who had multiple medical conditions and they also had a colostomy bag. I was somewhat turned off when I would care for them because they had an odor surrounding them and their colostomy bag. So here are my questions:
If I get this colostomy bag will it limit my mobility?
If I get this colostomy bag will I have an odor surrounding me as gas is released?
What are the pro's and con's of getting this procedure?

I am so sorry to hear your news. My so has a temporary colostomy bag. He's 20. No, this has not affected his mobility. We got a stealth belt on line and that helps him greatly with getting around and swimming. The smell is different, but only when he is emptying the bag. We have tried incense, candles, and an infuser. It is a blessing to see that he is no longer throwing up and running to the restroom non stop. I also think having nutrition advise would be helpful.
