My 53 yr old husband had a colectomy w/j-pouch reconstruction 2 weeks ago. Since then, he has lost 25 pounds, his sense of smell is completely out of whack, and he just nibbles on food. He is in pain, but it seems to be lessening a bit. His has a bag for the next 7 weeks until his 2nd surgery to reconnect.
Can someone tell me if these after effects sound normal?? I'm very alarmed by the weightloss; I'm taking in to see the Dr tomorrow. The home health nurse says it's normal, but I'm concerned. I'd really like to hear from others who've gone through this; how should he be feeling???

Hi Lara,
Thanks for your reply. Today I took my hubby back to the dr; they did say the weight loss is normal, but he should start going back up (it will be 2 weeks tomorrow). It also occurred to me, becuase he is a bodybuilder, that the muscles were the first to go; I think that is why it is so shocking. Anyway, dr took urine and blood to test for urinary tract infection (common I'm told) and will check his white blood count). I guess there is no "normal" way to feel, but it's so hard to know what is abnormal!
Thanks again -

My boyfriend of 8yrs has had for over 28 yrs. He was 12 when he had his first flare up and in the hospital he went for months. I can say hang in. It sounds like he is normal with the weight loss. Weight goes up and down very fast. Faster the loss then the struggle to gain. Chris just got reconnected after 5yrs and he is questioning his choice. He has lost 10 pounds and he feels like crud.
Hang in and keep us posted. (or me)
