loss of ileocecal valve, part of distal ileum, and cecum

Mon, September 08, 2008 12:54 PM

Two months ago, I had surgery where I lost my ileocecal valve, 45 cm of my distal ileum, and 14 cm of my colon (the cecum). Since the surgery, I have a feeling of needing to evacuate all the time, even when I don't, sour stomach,  terrible gas, and diarrhea. The worst part is that I can’t tell whether the problem is gas or diarrhea until I try to go and either way the feeling is just as urgent and uncomfortable. Has anyone ever had the same parts surgically removed? If so, did you have these symptoms? Did they go away? If so, how long did it take?  I would be so grateful to hear about your experiences, and any advice you might have. Thanks!

I know this is a very late reply, however, I have just begun to explore this site and have found someone else with symptoms like mine and that is you.  I had surgery in April 07. 19 inches of my intestines were removed, 4 of which were the large intestine.  Since then I have experienced the same symptoms as you, terrible gas, bloating, nearly always having the feeling of having to go, still having diareha  and potential "accidents".  I started taking immodium to help stay under control and slow down the constant activity. I am also taking a mild form of Librax to reduce the spasms in my colon. The last thing I started was Humira, which in my opinion is causing the gas, the worst I have had, ever.

At first, the immodium wasnt very effective when taking only one in the morning, so my doctor told me to increase the quantity.  I now take two in the morning before breakfast and one before lunch.  That generally helps keep me under control during the day, depending on what I eat. I find that if I stay in the bland food area, I tend to have less difficulty. However, having said that, my quality of life has not improved that much. I still find myself worrying about the urgent need for a bathroom at inopportune times. This is a problem that has plagued me for years.

The Humira, has helped somewhat. I started it on a biweekly basis and increased it to an injection every week. It is supposed to be the replacement for Remicaid, however the side effects can be significantly serious.  I have been going to Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville Florida for the last five years. I dont see much, if any difference in the results of our treatment. If something new is developed, I will let you know. Best of luck to you.

I had a ileococic resection in May and they explained it as part of my colon, part of my small intestine, appendix were removed. My Crohn's has been limited to the terminal ileum area so far. I have had horrible gas since the surgery but I don't have a constant sense of urgency. It is hard to tell what's gas and what's not though now and as a result I've started having some accidents that I never had presurgery. I had diarrhea presurgery and that hasn't stopped. Eating is improved now but sometimes after eating I get severely bloated. The constant right side pain I had before is gone and the postsurgery pain is gone BUT now the last 2 weeks I have a new right side pain a little further over than I had before. It's not constant yet but it's still on and off every day all day long. I've been waiting to discuss these issues at my next appt in a couple of weeks because I'm curious what will be forever and what will stop too. :)
