13 year old son facing first surgery

Sat, September 13, 2008 8:30 AM

my son was diagnosed at 11, and he has a stricture.  He has had very few symptoms.  Been on Pentasa, 6MP (now off 6MP) and now on Remicade.  He is actually doing well on the remicade but the stricture is getting worse.  He is having a resection in 2 weeks and I am pretty nervous.  We are hoping it will be done Laproscopically.  We are told  he should be in the hospital for 3-5 days and home about 3 weeks.  Anybody have any experience with this.  As a mother i am pretty afraid.    Thanks.

oops you are right i meant 3-5 days in the hospital and 3 weeks at home.  Thanks.  I am most afraid of the pain for him.

Barring any complications, that 3-5 weeks in the hospital does not sound right. He most likely will be in the hospital for resection maybe less than a week. I was 5 days.

This will be a much easier recovery than after the colectomy. Much easier.
The ickiest part is taking care of the opening left by the stoma. That went on for maybe two weeks after I got home, then it closed on its own.

Even if you meant by "first surgery" as having the colonectomy, that should be not much more than one week. I was 8 days post- colonectomy before I went home.
