My husband has UC and is on Remicade and Methotrexate. Our insurance deductable is doubling in January and we most likely won't be able to afford these meds any longer. This med is is last chance. He has made significant dietary changes, exercises and supplements in addition to these meds and is doing really well. We would love for him to be able to come off the meds entirely but feel it is too soon however feeling he is being forced in that direction by med costs. Wondering if anyone has had or knows someone who has had a partial resection of the bowel. His disease is and always has been only in the sigmoid & anus (techinically termed proctitis) - we feel like taking all of his colon out is drastic as he still and always has had healthy tissue prior the sigmoid. I'm wanting to know if anyone has been in this situation and who your surgeon was. We are willing to travel if this is an option. TIA.

I had my sigmoid removed because I had a cancerous tumor. I've had ulcerative colitis since 1995 and was doing regular annual colonoscopies. My tumor attached to the cecum and appendix and my Fallopian tube and ovary so those were removed. So I had two respected areas. I developed a leak at the cecum resection site so needed more surgery. I also developed an abcess. Two months later I had a small bowel obstruction caused by adhesions. I also developed an abcess. A month later I developed a suspected fistula (entercutaneois ) but they couldn't confirm it with any tests so was released. My bowel is too weak for any more surgeries. The initial two strgeons I met with recommended removal of entire colon but the cancer center surgeon said it was resectable. It may offer your husband some relief.
