18 yr old going to loose med insurance - considering surgery first

Mon, October 13, 2008 8:48 PM

My 18 year old son was diagnosed UC three years ago. Periods of remission have been brief...the longest with Remicade but broken due to durg reaction of the Remicade.

Asacol, prednisone & azathioprine.
Hospitalized for two weeks in July. Currently hospitalized for the past two weeks. Current hospitalization includes Cdiff. He is not responding well to medications this time. Bleeding has stopped but unformed stools and weak due to loss of blood.

Blood transfusion starting today. 2 antibiotics & pic line.

He is considering the surgery. In six months he will be 19 and loose health insurance because he is not taking college credits but going to a tech school.

Any advice is welcome.

Thanks,
Kathleen

Before you (or your son) rush a decision about surgury discuss w/ doc to make sure this is the best course of treatment for your son.  read CCFA's UC surgery fact sheet for more info http://www.ccfa.org/frameviewer/?url=/media/pdf/FactSheets/surgeryuc.pdf

The health insurance is important so when you get a chance read the Jaff article The importance of planning.  The article includes info about finding insurance for a grown child who is no longer eligible under parents' health insurance. Request a copy of the article at info@ccfa.org
