I am having a resection of my small intestine for Crohn's. I would like to not be on any medications post treatment (will probably try to get pregnant and generally like the idea of being drug free). Does anyone have any research that supports doing this or not? My Dr. said people who go back on Meds usually extend the time before they need more surgery, but he didn't have specifics.
Thanks!

My sister had a resection 12 years ago and has been on Pentasa. She's doing great (fingers crossed). I personally took Asacol through 2 pregnancies with no problems at all. Good luck with everything.
Reply posted for carl0938. Dear Carl0938 Actually everything drpends on how bad your C.D. is. I didn't take any meds. after my first resection. And i went almost twenty yrs. until my second resection. I've been on Asacol since aand its been seventeen yrs. But don't get hung up on not taking meds. They are out there for a reason and that is to keep you healthy. So if your drs. say to take them don't hesitate take them and keep smiling. postal-me

I did not know I had crohn's before my surgery. Thought I went in for pendicitis and they found large absess around that area. I have been on Asacol since, but there are people who do not take meds.
My doctor says the Asacol helps keep me in remission. I do not want to be the half of the statistic that has to have surgery again after about 5 years from surgery.
Good luck on your surgery.

Hi,
I had a bowel resection for CD one year ago. For the first time I was open to some new meds. I am taking 6mp, and am so very very happy to be symptom free (well virtually).
I used to be so "against meds" and tried to do everything naturally. As a long-time CD patient (28 years) I can tell 6mp is keeping it at bay. I told my doc I wanted a 6th child, and we decided to have me on 6mp for one year, then off for 2-3 months, then get pregnant. So I am planning #6.
God Bless
