diet after colon removal

Sun, January 25, 2009 11:43 AM

I have had UC for 13 years and am considering surgery. I've lived with a somewhat restricted diet already, having to be careful with tomatoes, fruits, vegetables, spicy and tangy foods, etc. I see some stating they have a changed diet after surgery. How so? Are you able to eat more or less than before? How about the above named foods? I'm an overweight male (5'9" and 220 lbs.) but I can't eat much of the fruits and vegetables that would help with that now. I'm worried about what else may happen after the surgery diet-wise, since I'm sure with being laid-up weight-loss is going to be difficult, to say the least. I realize there's more important things to worry about now than my weight, but I'm hoping to improve my life with this surgery, not back slide into something else. Any experienced voices would be appreciated.

Mags1,

I was wondering if I could ask about your surgery.  If it would be possible to email you or you email me then please do so.  VBallxchic@aol.com

I appreciate it!

I had a total colectomy done in Sept 07 it was an emergency situation I then had reconstruction done in Jan 08 and the takedown in April 08.As far as eating I had to watch certian foods like freash vegs and fruits,I was allowed to have cooked veggies. I also had to watch steak, and skin on meat and poultry. You can ask your doc for a list of things to avoid .The most important thing is to make sure you chew your food very well, because of blockages.I now am put back together and am pretty much able to eat what I want.(Still chewing well) I was told to test foods in small amounts to see how it works for you.For example I can eat salad but only in moderation same with nuts and greasy foods, these foods make me go to the bathroom more often and can cause looser bowels.I lost almost 50 pounds while going through my ordeal ,don't know if that is normal .Since then I gained about 15 back. The ordeal is alot to go through but I feel well worth it in the end. Hope this helps and good luck.

Hi, I had UC for 4 years and was stuck at the same weight for years because of my restricted diet.  I am a 5'5" woman and stayed at about 170 .  I had my j-pouch surgery in November and since then have lost about 23 pounds.  I think it is because I am able to eat a better variety of foods now.  I have my take down surgery scheduled for the end of Feb. so I know my diet will change again a little bit for a while after that but not by much.  I have struggled with my weight almost my entire life.  After the birth of my 3rd child I weight 235 lbs.  I know how it feels to be overweight.  I am so glad I had the surgery.  It has opened up a whole new life and new world for my family and me.
