Post surgery: Humira/Remicade or no drugs at all

Tue, February 24, 2009 1:00 AM

I just had surgery (an iliorection) and my Dr. is encouraging me to stay on Humira to prevent reoccurance of the disease. My husband and I want to get pregnant, and I had wanted to be drug free going into pregnancy. I am just feaful of being on a drug that has not been tested in pregnancy (and won't be because it is class D).

Also, I am allergic to Remicade, but they are very similar drugs, so if you have experience with that, I would be curious.

As for the pregnancy, I think only pentasa and prednisone are safe.  I took myself off of everything and ended up living at the hospital for 3 1/2 weeks prior my babies being born.  I was fed through a pic line.  I thought I was in remission at the time.  Watch your body when you get pregnant.  I was getting fevers every week or two and nobody knew why.  I think now it was Crohns related.  I never had belly aches, but I had no appetite whatsoever.  If I had only known earlier my Crohns was acting up I would have done different things (like take meds, see a nutritionist, etc.). But I also was pregnant with more than one.

Good luck.

When I was on Humira I was going to one of the best hospitals in the nation for bowel disorders ( I still go there, but off the Humira).  My doctor told me that it was a safe drug that could be continued indefinately and that I could have children no problem while on it.  I completely trust her about this.

I wouldn't go on prednisone if you can avoid it.  There are too many complications and risks to you while on that drug.  Humira, in my opinion, is the lesser of the evils.

I wish you all the luck!!  Take Care...Susan

in response to trying to get pregnant.  last year i had a perfectly healthy baby girl.  i was taken off of all my medications, and put on 60 mg of prednisone.  i still experienced symptoms...but the pregnancy actually made the symptoms more tolerable.  the dr explained as my body was putting its focus in a different area.  my baby was premature(7weeks), but due to the high dosage of prednisone she was born with all organs fully developed.  none of the drs thought that i would even make it to week 30, or have the baby at all....said my body couldnt handle it.  it was very risky, but things worked out in my favor.  i was very lucky.
