food after surgery

Do people find they can eat more after surgery, once they recover?

Did you know there is a website exclusively dedicated to j-pouchers?  It's jpouch.org.  There is a lot of great info there and a forum like this one to ask questions.  You may want to check it out!

Hi, there.  Yes!  I eat everything!!  There are some things that I pay for with extra bathroom trips or a little butt burn, but it's worth it.  The things that I learned I pay for too much I just cut down on.  I haven't found anything I can't eat yet.  My last surgery was Dec. 30, 2008.  I don't eat a lot of raw fruit and veggies yet, but I will.  I'm still trying to figure out how my new system works.

If this tells you anything...in the month after the last surgery I gained 7 pounds!   Yeah, you can eat!

Hope everything goes well for you!   Susan

ive been post opt from UC for 5 years now, I eat a fair variety of foods, grean beans very well cooked, carrots, apples (normally half) without the skin, even mandarin oranges are okay they do not have the same outer membrane like normal oranges thats bad for the Jpouch, with all foods tho it just takes time and trial and error, but definitely stick with the recommended food list. Also stay away from really oily foods, sometimes that can hav a bad effect, LIke my first encounter with homeade chicken fried steak didnt go well, but it was very rich, and normal chicken fried from a restaurant i do okay with. but.. you can have quite a bit of different foods, even lettuce in very small portions from time to time, but you really have to chew well, it doesnt break down very well. but thats only rarely when i feel like a bite of salad. but mainly stick to things that you react well too, dont push foods that you love but dont sit well with you, you'l just make things worst in the long run

Hi, I had UC for 4 years and was never in remission.  I finally had the 2 step j-pouch surgery done. The first part was in Nov. 08 and the second was in Feb. 09.  Before surgery I was only drinking 4-5 Ensure a day and having one bagel for dinner.  After each surgery I was able to eat a more regular diet.  I am still on a low fiber diet for a while but can eat most things in moderation.  Hope this helps.  For me, food is no longer the enemy.
