Gas pains after surgery

Sun, March 15, 2009 10:23 PM

I had my ileostomy take down surgery (for my j-pouch) in Feb. and am wondering if anyone had any advice on how to deal with the gas and gas pains that accompany the healing and adjustment period of my j-pouch?

Hi, Mags!!  Welcome to the wonderful world of the colonless!  There is a website that would help you greatly...it's jpouch.org.  You can find me there under the same name.  It will answer this question and lots more.  But, in the mean time...a heating pad across your middle will help.  Also, a hot bath (as far up as you can make it without messing with your ostomy closure).  And beano is good for intestinal gas...not gasx, which is more for stomach gas.

Try to chew your food really well.  And if you go for extended periods of time without food, that will cause gas to build up in your gut.  Try to eat small frequent meals.  And of course, walking will help the gas to move out of your system faster.

I hope that helps.  Please let me know if you need more help.  I just had my takedown in December and I'm doing great.

Take Care...susan
