I was fortunate enough to have my ileostomy reversed in February 09. I had to have my large bowel removed. So, now, I am using my small intestine.
I have had "accidents" while I was SOUND ASLEEP. It's happened about 4 times in the last month. Has anyone else experienced this, and what reasoning did your doctor give??
Thanks in advance-----

You must be a very sound sleeper. For some reason I have trained my body to wake me up when I need to go to the bathroom during the night. I usually go once or twice each night and go right back to sleep. I had my takedown in July 2002 so my J-pouch is well seasoned. Good luck in figuring out a system to wake up BEFORE you experience any surprises! Sometimes just setting the alarm for every 2-3 hours throughout the night will help. It shouldn't take you long to empty your J-pouch. Sit on the toilet and cough hard several times! That should do it! Best wishes!

Hi, Sandy. I'm so sorry that you are experiencing this. I had my reversal or "take down" on Dec. 30. I know that some people have had to do kegel exercises to get the tone back in their sphinter muscles. And imodium before bed can help you with your overnight leaks. Also, trying to not eat 3-4 hours before bed can, in some cases, help you through those first few months. Have you tried probiotics? Those in the long term will help you avoid pouchitis and help with your stools.
Please check out jpouch.org. There are lots and lots of people there who have had the jpouch surgery and experiencing the same thing you are. I was lucky and didn't have those complications, but I know many who have. This website is a great resource, but I think jpouch.org could help you more right now with these problems.
Take Care...Susan

I had my ileostomy reversed in May 2004, the first 1-2 months were unstable, I was lucky never to have an actual accident, but it took a while for everything to adjust and get back to a normal rhythm. I do have a little bit of colon left (about 1 foot) so maybe that helps too, but give it some time.
