If I had surgery for crohns why can't I eat what I want

Had surgery 3 yrs ago.  Don't understand why disease was removed, yet I still can't eat lots of foods.  I can eat nothing healthy!

About not being able to eat healthy: I can't really eat raw veggies or fruits either without a lot of problems.  You might try digestive enzymes or eating only cooked vegetables/ fruits too-- because those are easier to digest and they have still got some of the vitamins and good stuff in them.

Well, that's the thing: the disease wasn't "removed" by surgery.  It never is.  The affected part of your bowel may have been removed, but Crohn's is never completely removed.  It can come back anywhere in your GI tract, and it's kind of *always* there anyway-- at least for me it's always been there.  It just gets better and worse over time.  Anyway, I had surgery in 2001 and I still can't eat anything I want, although I am able to eat mostly what I want.  Some things give me more trouble than others.

I guess my only advice for this would be to weigh the benefits and risks of eating certain things you like (i.e., if milkshakes make u have diarrhea, maybe only have one when you REALLY want one and when you know you're going to be at home for a while, or home for the entire day).  I personally can't have anything spicy, onions, or coffee.  Coffee especially makes me sick.  But I've learned to get used to not being able to sit at Starbucks and enjoy a cup with my friends... I just stick to Tazoberry tea.  ;)

But if you're really unable to eat a LOT of things, then maybe you're having another flare up that needs to be taken care of.  You might want to talk to your GI doc about it and see what he/ she thinks.

In response to the person that said Remicaid is free if you do not have insurance in not true in the state of Mississippi.  I would owe somewhere in the amount of $2000.00 for this treatment and I do not have that kind of money. I have tried several meds over the past 22 years {that is how long I have had this} and there are so many that the side effects were almost as bad as the problems I was having.  I have had to have so many IV's due to being dehydrated that it is even hard for them to find a vein to even draw blood.  If I have to be admitted to the hospital they have to  put the IV in my neck or chest because even if they find one in my arms, legs, between my toes they blow out in no longer than two days.  I am just so tired of hurting and not making it to the bathroom in time that I do a lot of crying and praying.  I have tried to find another doctor and he was even worse, called another one and she did not take medicare.  You had to pay her up front and then let medicare pay you, if they do.  So many of the test they run and the meds they give are NOT covered by medicare.  I could live with not eating, as long as I can keep liquids in me if I could stop the pain.  Thanks for listenning and hope everyone has a great day.3

I am sorry you are having problems with eating after your surgery and what I am about to say does not mean I think your problem is any less important than mine.  I had 5 inches of my colon removed in 1992, I had 6 more inches removed Feb 2008. I still can't eat, I can't sleep from hurting so bad, and 90% of the time I can't even make it to the bathroom before I have an accident.  But, the doctor tell me I am OKAY.  I run from 101degrees to 104 each and every day, I can't eat and I hurt so bad I have thought of just ending it all.  I can't keep living like this.  And none of my family understands.  I have lost a husband {because he was to chicken to help me} and 2 jobs only because I could not get there everyday.  It wasn't because I was not doing my job, because when I was there I always got raises and praises.  But, they needed someone there all the time.  The doctors don'/t care that I still hurt, can't make it to the bathroom and run fever.  They could care less.  Plus all I have is medicare and there aren't any doctor's around here that will take medicare and help me out.  I just don't know what to do.  Most of the meds I can't take. The styroid drives me up the wall and there are just so many I can't take. Plus onhe med he put me on cost $452.87 EACH month and the insurance would not cover it.  What can I do?  I need help.  Thanks for listening to me.
