Sigmoid Removal

Mon, March 30, 2009 6:34 PM

The doctors have said we are approaching our final option: Surgery.

I have had Crohn's for 3 years and the presentation of the disease has been fairly different among my 3 major flare ups. In its last rendition, which has lasted for about a year, the major part of my large intestine that is affected is the Sigmoid Colon. They want to remove it.

My concern is that given that the disease has presented itself elsewhere, why will removing this part truly help me in the long run. The argument the doctors present is that this is (currently) the most affected region, causing me the most suffering, and removing this will allow us to have an easier time maintaining remission of the other parts.

I have always felt surgery is the last resort and given that I am 22, I hate to think that I am at a last resort.

Any advice/feedback people can give, would be greatly appreciated! Also, has anybody had success with removing parts of their intestine, while others parts are (or have once been) diseased?
