What is the best output consistency for a j-pouch

Tue, April 07, 2009 6:57 AM

Hi - I have met with two different surgeons and have gotten conflicting information.  I currently have an ileostomy and am considering a j-pouch.  One surgeon told me that if my output was mostly "liquid" Id likely have trouble with leakage.  The other surgeon told me that the consistency of the output had no bearing on the functioning of the pouch.  What have been your expreinces?

Thanks-
Tosha

Thank you for your input about the output! -lol.  I really want to try the j-pouch surgery and your experience calms some of my concerns.

When I had my ileostomy I was concerned that because my output was pure liquid, I would have a difficult time with control once I was reconnected.  I shouldn't have worried!  There was no connection between the before/after takedown effluent consistency!  I have perfect control and have since 2002 when I had my J-pouch takedown.  Surgeon #2 was right!
