Post Surgery Depression!

Mon, April 27, 2009 5:58 PM

hi!  i'm posting for thaddeus.  i'm his wife, shanan.  he had his colon removed march 13th.  he's been back in the hospital 4 times so far with complications.  he's feeling like he wishes he hadn't had the surgery to begin with .  he was so sick before.  since last august he's lost 40 lbs. and his health has been spiralling down.  this seemed like the last option for us to try.

i was wondering if anyone knows of a source for some counseling for him.  he's only been at home 14 days total since the surgery.  i don't know if he'll get online like this and look for others to talk to yet.  he can't right now anyway b/c he's still in the hopsital.  we have two little kids and he wants to be home with us.  he's really getting depressed about all the road blocks he seems to be hitting.

thanks so much!

I am so sorry your family is having to go thru this.

I was in the hospital 2x in the last 6 mo.  It can be very depressing to be sick and have so much weight loss let only having to deal with whether or not the right decision was made about surgery.  Is your husband on any kind of depression meds.  I currently take lexapro and it seems to help. I cry when I have to. There is nothing wrong w/tears.  But, for some men it is difficult for them to ask for help or cry.
It would be helpful if you could get him a laptop.  Most hospitals have internet.  If you can't figure it out most hospital have an IT person to help. Show your husband the CCFA website and let him explore.  Believe me you can only watch so much TV while in the hospital.  Good Luck to you & your family.
