My husband was suffering from ulcerative colitis for two years. He tried several medicines but there was no improvement. He finally had the j-pouch surgery one month ago. He has a temporary ileostomy and today he is in the hospital again because of ileus. I would like to ask if anybody had a similar experience and how they got over it.

Thanks for all the extra input. It definately helps to know that things are looking up for you and your husband. Good luck and God Bless !
Reply posted for rifles96.He got over the problem due to his quick hospitalization. Doctors told us that it was not a complication of the surgery, but it was due mostly to the fact that he had eaten more than his intestine could take. For a few hours we feared that a new and more serious operation would be the only way to get over the problem, but as time went by, his situation was getting better and better,so we finally avoided the worse.Anyway, don't get disapointed by this incident. Both me and my husband are very satisfied from the way this operation has changed our lives (no more urgent trips to the bathroom,no more pain) and we are looking forward to the final operation, in order to be able to get back to our usual way of living. No doubt it is a very serious operation, that, at least for my husband, lasted about 6 hours, but it definately worthed while.I hope everything will work out well for you too.
Best regards

Oh no, I wish I could help. I am having the same surgery on May 20. I have been struggling with U.C. for 4 years, but recently been told that is most likely crohn's. I will be having my entire colon ( large intestine ) removed and a J pouch put in. I am being told that it will take 2 surgeries. After the 1st one I will have a ileostomy bag for 2-3 months allowing the j pouch to heal and then I will have a 2nd surgery removing the bag and connecting the ileum back together. Now I am very concerned. Please keep me informed on your husbands progress or any information on what I need to expect would really help me. I have spoken with many people that have had surgeries. So far all have reported that things have gone well for them.
