How many surgeries have you had???

Sat, May 16, 2009 9:04 PM

I have had CD for 15 years now.  I have had 3 surgeries which resulted in a total of 28" of terminal ileum and colon to be resected.  My last sugery was 12/31/08 - only 3.5 yrs since my last surgery.  How has your condition and experiences been?  Thanks.

Good Luck at CCF - I don't go anywhere else.  It is one of the top two hospitals in the nation for GI treatments.

I was finally after years of problems diagnosed with severe diverticulitis in 07 and had my resection in June 07 and they removed 18 inches, 5 days later I had to go back in due to a bad connection/leaking and they put a colostomy, then in Nov 07 they reversed the colostomy and removed 4 more inches of interstine and this time it took.  I had some relief while I had the colostomy.  Once it was reversed I started with pain again.  I was diagnosed in 08 and hospitalized with UC.  A month later I had to have another surgery due to cysts on ovaries which were caused by the previous multiple surgeries.  I now have chronic pain, swelling, fatigue and so on.  I was diagnosed this year after one of many colonoscopies with Crohn's.  I am now taking Lialda, probiotic, metamucil, miralax and so on....I have tons of scar tissue, 2 hernias and they believe some nerve entrapment.  Needless to say, I know the surgery saved my life, but I still have so many problems and more than I had before.

I actually just had my 3rd surgery a little over a week ago (June 3rd).  I have Crohn's and am realizing this isn't a wonderful option...but my only option.  I know they took 14 inches this last one and I believe about a foot with each of the previous surgerys.  I am seeking out more knowledge now than ever before.  I am too young to have had so many surgerys and am scared to death I won't go into remission.  I think sometimes I feel like I should be able to have more control over this than I do.  I am just recently starting to make some major diet changes.  I just ordered "Ending the Vicious Cycle" and have already been trying no gluten or dairy.  At this point I don't see what it could hurt.  I'm on all the medicines as well including Asacol, 6mp, Humira, B12 shots, and am tapering off of prednisone.  I also just quit drinking diet coke which has been really hard but I know the caffiene and carbonation wern't good for me.
