I have been diagnosed with severe ulcerative colitis. I am controlled pretty well imuran and asacol. But with school, side affects of the pills and having take them, remembering to take them, and all the trouble with them at school I would just like to get the thing removed and be done with it. I,m tiered of "this could cause problmes, should I eat it?" and when I'm on antibiotics I seen to have trouble. I want to know if once you have the surgery do you know the bag is there? can you get hit in the stomic and be alright? does it feel different? do have to deal with urgency? I don't want a doctors prospective I want to know from someone who has had it done. I like the idea of this "cure" and have done a lot of reasurch but I need to know! PLEASE ANYONE!!!

I just read your story and found it very informative know I know what questions to tell my daughter to ask the doctor she has crohn's and know she's got something else that they can't figure ou and it has to do with the lare intestine now they say her chron's isn't the problem right now.

Hi futurepilot. Please see the post I just submitted "Sharing post-surgery story and Seeking advice". My understanding is that ulcerative make you a much better candidate for surgery than Crohn's since once the diseased portion is removed it's gone.
Why would you need a bag? My understanding is that if the anus is okay then even just it can be connected to the end of the small bowel. And please, please, please -- look into laparascopic surgery. If they could remove 3/4 of my colon which was incredibly diseased, scarred and swollen laparoscopically, I don't see why yours can't be too.

Well what about, if I pick up my books at school and slid them against my chest, would that be ok? Thanks so much I really appreciated it!

Hello-my 21 yr old son has Crohns and had surgery in Dec.08. He had a partial colectomy and ileostomy. He was a little upset with the bag for about 1 week! He just had reversal surgery 2 weeks ago. After resuming bathroom runs, he actually said the bag was not a bad thing. He can be lazy and this fit right in with his thinking! (haha) Let me tell you he continued at his military college, and except for a few allowances on uniforms, resumed his normal life, including physical training. You don't want to get hit in the stomach so that it punctures the bag, but you will be able to do most anything you've done before. The surgery has allowed him to be healthier than he's been in 3 years..we hope it continues! Talk it over with your surgeons and maybe even the nurses before deciding. Good luck and don't stress out too much.
