Any Strictureplasty Experiences? Good or Bad?

Tue, June 30, 2009 1:42 AM

Im scheduled to have a Stricturoplasty surgery on July 22nd at UCLA and I was wondering if anyone here has had a similar operation/procedure?

And if so, how are you doing now after the surgery?
Any complications?
Any advice?
I have a lot of scar tissue from 25 years of Crohns and one previous resection in 1988.  The Crohns itself is more or less "burnt out" to quote my G.I. and its all the scar tissue and narrowing that is causing obstructions and major cramping/abdominal pain.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks a lot in advance!

Hello Wayne,

Surgery went good on July 22nd.
All in all about 30cm was resected in my small bowel with a another 5cm repaired with strictureplasty and connected to my colon.
The bulk of the bowel in question was too scarred from the disease and beyond repair.
The only complication, if you want to call it that, was a "wound" I developed from a slight infection along the incision line which opened up and only recently has almost fully closed.  Initially it was about 4 inches long and 2-3 inches deep.
Only time will tell if the Surgery is a complete or partial success. Thus far I've had no bowel obstruction symptoms and right now I'm still adjusting to frequent bowel movements, which is common after surgery.
Thanks for asking!

Had no problems with mine. Had it done in a hospital, and had wonderful results for about a month. Then the stricture reared it ugly head again.

Thanks for the response Wayne.

I was wondering... where did you have the initial Strictureplasty performed? State? Hospital? Surgeon?
It sounds like the Stictureplasty did not go well at all if it got infected and eventually had to be removed by another Surgeon.
Infection is my greatest concern at this point.
I'm glad all worked out for you now.
Are you on any preventive medication at this point?
