How long recovery Jpouch

Fri, July 03, 2009 1:41 PM

Hello All

I have UC and I am contemplating surgery (j pouch).  I was wondering how long it be before i was able to go back to work. I am in the accounting field and generally sit all day behind a computer.

Thanks

I had the colectomy and jpouch done in one surgery on Dec. 27, 2006.

Eight days in the hospital. Once home, the first two weeks were miserable.
It was towards the end of January that I felt "normal" and could have gone back to work at the beginning of February. But I was still weak.

That first month is a %$%&%*%^.

Hi.

I had the 1st of 2 surgeries on May 15th. It's been 8 weeks and I just returned back to work today. Much like you, I work in an environment where I'm sitting behind a desk on the computer for the majority of the day. I was original scheduled to go back to work after 6 weeks part-time but decided to take the full 8 weeks allotted through my Short Term Disability. I made the right decision. Even though I could've made it back after 6 weeks, my level of energy wasn't 100% yet. I found myself out of breath and lightheaded at times just from walking from one room to another or sitting for a long period of time and then suddenly standing. Mentally you're all ready to go but physically your body will tell you when it's time. I think that was by far the most frustrating part wanting to do so much but not having the energy to do so. It takes time. However, if you listen to your body, it will be your best indicator. My best guess then would be between 6-8 weeks.

Good luck!

If you have done your research, I guess you know that it will consist of two surgeries.  I had a total colectomy on May 20th, 2009. I then had a loop ileostomy until June 24th, 2009.  On this day I had my takedown surgery ( goodbye stoma ).  It is not easy, but I am very happy that I had the surgery. I was very fortunate to have my ileostomy for only five weeks. I am now a week and a half out of my second surgery and starting to feel pretty good.  I have no regrets !!!  Here is a website link that may help you.....  http://www.jpouch.net/photos/surgery-1/   Good Luck!
