Post Surgery Pain

Thu, July 23, 2009 7:01 PM

Hi,

I had surgery 2 weeks ago that removed a small part of my small intestine and the beginning of the colon (Cecum).  My question is that now that I'm eating, I'm feeling increased pain on the right side of my stomach.  I can't tell if the pain is coming from inside the colon or from outside.  It seems to be worse at night (it wakes me up), but also happens during the day.  Has anyone else who's had a similar surgery experienced this pain and do you know how long it's expected to last?

Thanks!

A lot depends on what your husband is going to have surgically removed as to how long his recovery will be. Yes he will have pain, yes he will have more bowel movements that will all get better with time....the worst part is the mental anguish and the length of time in surgery has an effect also I have heard from some several friends who have had surgery that it takes a week for every hour that you under for the anesthetic get out of you system and that does not include the pain meds afterward ( Percocet,Oycoten etc)  "Take your pain meds you will need them"

Hi Mars,

Hopefully I can help with some of your questions.  The first couple of weeks after the surgery my bowel movements were more frequent than usual (about 3-4 times a day and not as much per movement), they were also softer than usual.  Now after 3 weeks, they seem to be back to normal.  The first 2 weeks after surgery were the worst because I still experienced pain and wasn't able to move around as much.  Now 3 weeks after surgery the pain has decreased and I'm able to cook, walk around, do things on my own without pushing it too much.  I'm trying not to put any strain on my stomach and to still rest while taking walk daily.  I'm starting to feel like I'm getting my strength back now every day, and the pain seems to decrease every day.  I decided to take 6 weeks off of work because my job is really demanding and I need to have full strength before going back.  I'm going to see how I feel in a couple of weeks to make sure I'm ready to go back.  I think everyone is different so it depends on the job.  If it involves physical activity, your husband may need more time off,  and it depends how demanding it is mentally too because if it's a stressful job it may be better to take more time off.  Also, the recovery depends on how much of the colon is removed I believe.  Do you know how much they are going to remove for your husband?

Let me know if you have any other questions, I'll be glad to answer them.  Overall I feel better than I did before the surgery and am able to eat more and feel better after I eat.

hello

I had similiar surgery 6weeks ago. I had 4 resections done and removal of Cecum and terminal ileum. The pain you are referring to, on your right side, is what I have been experiencing too. It feels like my insides is bruised and the feeling also exists on the surface of lower abdomen. Like you this occurred after being able to eat. I do not know why but suspect it is due to frequent bowel movement due to the surgery as I have a short bowel with 80cm of my small intestine removed. I am on pain meds (opioids) which help with the pain and probably would be worst pain without the pain meds.

Hopes this helps

Rob

Hi!

Im sorry because I cant help you out with your question, but maybe you can help me out... my husband its scheduled to have the same surgery you had, and we are concerned regarding the effects this surgery would have in the colon, is there any change in your bowel movements after surgery? increased? decreased? and how do you feel after this 2 weeks beside your pain, how long do you think it will take for you to go back to work.

I hope you can recover very fast and your pain goes away. I know its not an easy decision and it really scares me.

Thank you.
