Crohn's Surgery questions

Wed, August 05, 2009 9:05 PM

Hello,

I'm scheduled for surgery September 30th to have the begining of my colon and 1-5 feet of intestines removed due to a blockage.  Has anyone had this surgery done?  If so, any advice?

Anything I should do to prepare before the surgery?

Thanks in advance for the help and advice.

I had and ileostomy in April 2009.  I think the most important thing before surgury is to get good nutrition.  This means proten and vitamins.  I drank two to three cans of Ensure a day and took iron, vitamin c and d and a b-12 shot.  Have the doctor give you a blood test to see what is low. The better health you are going into surgury, better you are able to heal, which means less complications.

I was able to heal very quickly and got out of the hospital in five days.  Good luck and I hope you feel better.

Thank you for the all the GREAT advise.

The unknown is the scary part, put knowing alittle more through your surgeries is a GREAT help.

Wish you all the best.

I had an ileococic resection in May 08. They did it as a hand assisted laproscopic surgery which means in addition to the laproscopic holes they reopened my bikini cut c-section scar also. I was in the hospital for one week and off of work for a total of 8 weeks. I tried to get everything I felt like I would be tempted to do done before surgery: cleaning the house, stocking up on food, etc... You will be on a specific diet after surgery so find out what your doctor suggests so you can buy it ahead of time. I also was not allowed to drive for awhile so I'd line up people to drive you to appts, etc.. if you end up having driving restrictions also. I honestly didn't feel like I was up to driving right after anyhow. Also, if you haven't already, I would suggest having a "meet the surgeon" appt so you can ask any questions. I know sometimes they tell you you have to have surgery and your regular doctor just sets it up and you don't meet the surgeon until the day of surgery.

I have had this surgery twice. Even though everyone is different, it is a difficult surgery, in my opinion. If they do the incision laterally (down the middle) they will be cutting through your abdominal walls which is the core of your body. Be patient with your body. It will be difficult for you to sit up, stand or even sneeze. It will get better, I promise. As far as what to do before surgery, do whatever your heart desires because you will be down for the count for awhile. In my case it was 3 months. Get good nutrition in before and relax. Good Luck.
