DX Blockage & Defective Valve

Thu, August 06, 2009 12:00 AM

I was dx w/blockage @ end of sm bowel & a defective valve from crohns.  My doc tried to undo blockage during a colonoscopy but I kept waking up.   After scope sypmtoms went away and I was normal for two months until now.  How could I be okay for 2 months if I had blockage?  Anybody dx w/defective valve?  What is the outcome?   I am suppose to see a surgeon.

I was just diagnosed with Chron's and the doctors are telling me that I need surgery ASAP to remove my IC valve and a partial blockage at the end of my small intestine.  Reading all the these posts is really scaring me.  Did you have to have an ostomy after your surgery?  How long did it take you to recoup from the surgery?  I would appreciate any insite.

I forgot to mention they removed the valve and cecum.  I understand it was in very bad shape 8.5 of 10 in terms of worse non-emergency case he ever had in sixteen years.  I had no idea my insides were in such bad shape.

I had a partial blockage in Nov. when I landed in the ICU.

It cleared up with meds (Imuran and high dosage Prednisone) and I thought it was over.  I cancelled my surgical consult.  Dr. said I should not have cancelled even though I felt well because the blockage would return.

I had the surgery in Feb.  The surgeon said my intestines were swollen to four times normal size and no amount of medication would solve the problem.  My intestestines were in danger of not only blocking but of dying.

Twelve inches removed and I feel great.  The surgery was not anywhere near as painful as I feared.  The IVs hurt worse than the hand assisted laproscopic surgery.

I am still on Imuran and Remicade for life in hopes of keeping inflammation from returning.  I am happy to take the meds if I continue to feel great and avoid the dreaded prednisone and crohns issues.
