My daughter had surgery, no bag, but having a very rough time.

My daughter had a laproscopic colonectomy in June, had the bag 5 weeks total, and then had that removed. The problem is she has a severe rash/skin break down on her bottom, very near the anus. It is just raw!We are not doing dairy, and now avoiding sugary drinks like gatorade. We have tried about every cream/ointment the docs have perscribed and nothing is really helping. Caldascene powder has been about the best, so far.  The reason for the iritation and burning is the frequency issue. She is still going 13-20 times a day!Does anyone have any suggestions on diet? She is taking immodium and metamucil 3 times a day. She is also using Cholestrimin (?) powdered drink mix.  Life is very difficult for her, and she starting to get depressed because she lives hour to hour not knowing if she'll feel well enough to venture to school, etc.

Critic-Aid by coloplast is a cream that works well for my daughter.  Also try alternating layers of stomapowder and Cavilon no-sting barrier wipes. Then put Critic-Aid over the last Cavilon layer.  The Cavilon/stomapowder only has to be totally removed once daily.

Another suggestion is a prescription for "Magic Butt Cream". The pharmacist has to mix it, but it really is magic.  It's contents are 2 parts Nystatis Cream 100 MU/GM, 2 parts Zinc Oxide Ointment, 1 part Maalox Liquid.  The formula is from a gastroenterologist.

Have you tried a low residue diet?  It's a low fiber diet, so it should help some with the frequency.  Once she gets down to going fewer times a day, you can slowly add back foods to see how her body will react to them.

Try putting the cream/ointment on before she goes to the bathroom.  It will act as a barrier between her skin and waste.
